„Supersymmetry, Extra Dimensions and the Origin of Mass: Exploring the Nature of the Universe Using PetaScale Data Analysis“
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), scheduled to begin operation in Summer 2008, will collide protons at energies not accessible since the time of the early Universe. The study of the reactions produced at the LHC has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the most fundamental forces in nature. The ATLAS experiment, currently being installed at the LHC, is designed to detect collisions at the LHC, to collect the relevant data and to provide a unified framework for the reconstruction and analysis of these data. This talk will review the goals of the ATLAS program and will describe the software and computing challenges associated analyzing these data. Among the relevant issues are the need to develop and maintain a unified analysis framework for use by more than 1000 scientists and the need for distributed access to large (petabyte) scale data samples, including a significant metadata component.

Why doesn’t magenta appear in the rainbow? The answer lies not in physics but in biology.

Science presenter Steve Mould demonstrates the strange phenomenon of colour mixing, in which not everything is as it seems. The cone cells within our eyes are responsible for the colours we see, but are only sensitive to Red, Green and Blue light. So how are we able to see so many colours when we can only directly detect three and how do our brains see the colour magenta which doesn’t have a wavelength?

Steve explains all with the help of his coloured torches and explores how everyday technology fools our brains into seeing more.

„Arno Luik hat im Juli 2010 erstmals über das Immobilien- und Bahnprojekt „Stuttgart 21″ geschrieben. Durch seine regelmäßige Berichterstattung im „Stern“ hat er das umstrittene „Jahrhundertprojekt“ zum bundesweiten Thema gemacht.

Warum bloß halten die Bahn und so viele Politiker an S21 fest? Warum reagieren die regierenden Grünen in Stuttgart, die wegen des Widerstands gegen S21 an die Macht kamen, nicht? Warum kündigen sich nicht die Verträge? Warum überprüfen sie die Verträge nicht?

Bei S21 scheint die Vernunft keine Rolle mehr zu spielen. Im September 2011 hatte Kanzlerin Angela Merkel erklärt, an S21 „entscheide sich die Zukunftsfähigkeit Deutschlands“. Wie bitte? Was hat denn die Zukunftsfähigkeit eines Landes damit zu tun, dass man einen perfekt funktionierenden Kopfbahnhof mit 17 Gleisen zerschlägt, ihn auf acht Gleise reduziert, ihn in die Tiefe legt und zu einer Art ICE-U-Bahnhöfle macht?

Kein Projekt hat in Deutschland erst die Bürger so aufgeschreckt, dann politisiert wie das Großprojekt in Stuttgart. Die demonstrierenden Bürger wurden als Wutbürger diffamiert, als Ewiggestrige verhöhnt. Aber der 12. Dezember 2012, jener Tag, an dem der Bahnvorstand seinen Offenbarungseid geleistet hat, zeigt, dass sie mit ihren Zweifeln klüger waren als Bahn und Politik. Die haben Vertrauen verspielt. Aber die Demokratie hat gewonnen. In Stuttgart — und Esslingen — hat sich der Bürger emanzipiert. Er hat gelernt der politischen Sprache zu misstrauen. Im Fall S21 hießen die verführerischen Worte: Magistrale, Zukunftsfähigkeit, Hochgeschwindigkeitskorridor, Das neue Herz Europas.

Dieser wachgerüttelte Bürger wird der traditionellen Politik lästig. Er lässt sich nicht mehr so schnell verführen. Er misstraut nun dem so gern benutzten Wort „alternativlos“. Alternativen gibt es immer. Wir freuen uns auf einen faktenreichen Vortrag und eine spannende Diskussion.“
